14 Major Central Government Welfare Programmes in India: Current Status and Official Links

The Union Government operates programmes covering health, food security, housing, farming, employment, drinking water, nutrition, women and child protection, banking access and school education. Eligibility, benefit delivery and approval periods can change, so use the responsible department’s current portal instead of relying on an old video, forwarded message or agent.

This English version follows the reviewed Bengali article and the same Government of India sources checked on 6 August 2026. It is an explainer, not an eligibility decision or guarantee of benefit.

Important approval boundaries

• Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0: approved through December 2028.
• PMAY-G: current phase approved for FY 2024-25 through 2028-29.
• NFSA foodgrain: entitlement foodgrain is approved free of cost for five years from 1 January 2024.
• PM POSHAN: temporarily continued under existing conditions until 30 September 2026 or the next approval date, whichever is earlier.
• AMRUT 2.0 and Samagra Shiksha: check the latest central approval before quoting a new long-term end date or total outlay.

1. AMRUT 2.0

AMRUT 2.0 is an urban infrastructure programme for drinking water, sewerage, septage management, water-body rejuvenation and urban water security. It is not a personal cash-benefit scheme. Its original approved period was 2021-22 to 2025-26.

Check the relevant Urban Local Body and the official AMRUT portal for the current status of works or connections. Do not assume a multi-year continuation after March 2026 without a newer central approval.

2. Ayushman Bharat

Major parts of Ayushman Bharat include:

• AB PM-JAY: hospitalisation-based secondary and tertiary care cover of up to ₹5 lakh per eligible family per year;
• Ayushman Vay Vandana: a separate card route for people aged 70 or above;
• Ayushman Arogya Mandir: primary and comprehensive healthcare services;
• Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: digital-health infrastructure, including ABHA.

Use the NHA beneficiary portal to check eligibility, card services and empanelled hospitals. Implementation and hospital networks can differ by state.

3. NFSA and One Nation One Ration Card

Eligible Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Household beneficiaries receive foodgrain under the National Food Security Act. The central decision provides NFSA entitlement foodgrain free of cost for five years from 1 January 2024.

One Nation One Ration Card enables eligible ration-card holders to use portability in another area or state. Check entitlement, ration-card details and Fair Price Shops through the NFSA portal.

4. Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0

Jal Jeevan Mission supports safe piped drinking-water supply and long-term service delivery for rural households. The Union Cabinet approved JJM 2.0 through December 2028.

Check household or village status through the Jal Jeevan Mission portal and the local water-supply authority. Dashboard figures do not replace a check of actual household service.

5. Mahatma Gandhi NREGA

MGNREGA gives adult members of a rural household a legal guarantee of up to 100 days of unskilled manual work in a financial year when work is demanded. Employment is not automatic: the household needs a valid Job Card and must request work through the Gram Panchayat or designated authority.

Use the MGNREGA portal for Job Card, muster-roll, work and payment information.

6. Mission Vatsalya

Mission Vatsalya provides a framework for child rights, child protection, family-based care, the Juvenile Justice system and support for children in difficult circumstances. It prioritises family and community-based care, with institutional care treated as a last resort.

Use the Mission Vatsalya page, the District Child Protection Unit and the current Child Helpline 1098 arrangement for local help.

7. Mission Shakti

Mission Shakti is an umbrella programme for women’s safety, protection and empowerment. Its two broad sub-schemes are:

• Sambal: safety support including One Stop Centres, Women Helpline and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao;
• Samarthya: empowerment, accommodation, childcare and related support.

8. National Health Mission

The National Health Mission includes the National Rural Health Mission and National Urban Health Mission. It supports health-system strengthening, maternal and child health, communicable and non-communicable disease programmes and public-health delivery.

Use the NHM portal and the relevant State Health Mission for state programmes, approvals and documents.

9. Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin

PMAY-G supports eligible rural households in constructing a pucca house with basic amenities. The current central phase covers FY 2024-25 to 2028-29, with an additional ceiling of two crore rural houses.

Selection depends on official lists, modified exclusion criteria, Gram Sabha verification and the appeal process. Use the PMAY-G portal and never pay an agent for selection or sanction.

10. Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana

PMJDY links people outside formal banking to basic savings accounts, RuPay cards, direct-benefit transfer and other financial services. The official scheme page states:

• no minimum balance requirement;
• an eligible overdraft of up to ₹10,000;
• RuPay accident insurance of ₹2 lakh for eligible accounts opened after 28 August 2018, and ₹1 lakh for the earlier eligible-account category.

Check the PMJDY scheme page and the official channel of the bank.

11. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi

PM-KISAN provides ₹6,000 per year in three equal instalments through DBT to eligible cultivable landholding farmer families, subject to the official exclusion list.

Use the PM-KISAN portal for registration, e-KYC and beneficiary status. Keep Aadhaar-linked bank and land-record details consistent.

12. PM POSHAN

PM POSHAN provides cooked meals to specified students in government and government-aided schools. The earlier five-year approval ended in 2025-26. While the next cycle is appraised, the programme has a temporary continuation with the same scope, structure, coverage and cost norms until 30 September 2026 or the date of the next approval, whichever is earlier.

Use the PM POSHAN Programme Approval Board page and school or state information for current coverage and grievance arrangements.

13. Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0

This umbrella programme covers nutrition support for children aged six months to six years, services for pregnant and lactating women, Early Childhood Care and Education, Anganwadi infrastructure, Poshan Abhiyaan and Poshan Tracker.

Services are delivered through state and local Anganwadi systems. Check the official Poshan 2.0 page for current beneficiary and service details.

14. Samagra Shiksha

Samagra Shiksha is an integrated school-education programme from pre-school to Class XII, covering infrastructure, inclusive education, teacher development, girls’ education, vocational education and learning outcomes.

The previous approved five-year phase ended on 31 March 2026. Official 2026 consultation and planning documents show implementation and planning for the next phase, but a precise new multi-year end date or total outlay should not be stated without a complete new Cabinet or CCEA approval.

Before applying or sharing personal information

1. Start from the responsible programme’s official portal.
2. Check the central rule and the implementing state’s current process.
3. Do not pay an agent for beneficiary selection, sanction or a guaranteed benefit.
4. Never share an OTP, PIN, password or full banking credentials.
5. Save acknowledgements and grievance references.
6. Recheck dates and status before acting.
